There’s a lovely little story on Bernard “Pretty” Purdie (perhaps the most successful drummer of all times, if one is to count the #1 hits he’s played on) told by Donald Fagen on the Classic Albums tv doc on Steely Dan’s 1977 album Aja:
“He would come to a session, in the early 60s, and he’d have two signs with him. And he’d set up this signs: on one side of the drums it would say “You’ve done it!”, and the sign on the other side would say: “You done hired the hitmaker, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie!”.
But then, of course, Pretty Purdie could do this (and you’ll find Fagen’s quote at the end of the clip).
