Egyptians considered it a divinity, the Greeks associated it with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rod_of_Asclepius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healing<\/a>, for Jews and Christians it embodies evil deviousness. <em>Snake<\/em> is also used in everyday language, seldom as a compliment (unless you&#8217;re talking about a dancer, or a lover). There are <a href=\"http:\/\/search.azlyrics.com\/search.php?q=snake&amp;p=1&amp;w=songs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many songs<\/a> that use the snake as a metaphor. Since Alice Cooper (photo below), snakes have become the mandatory pets of Metal stars. There are even bands with snakes in the name, like Whitesnake or Slash\u2019s Snakepit. Here are some songs with a different perspective on these reptiles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"otw-sc-divider otw-text-left\" style=\"margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lee_Hooker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Lee Hooker<\/a>: Crawling King Snake (1959)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-452\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sergiomessina.com\/moss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/jlh.jpg\" alt=\"john lee hooker\" width=\"180\" height=\"256\" \/>In African american music, secular and religious, snakes are abundant. In both cases, the prototype is usually the biblical image of the serpent. This song is an exception and, as usual, there&#8217;s a story behind it: &#8220;<em>Crawling King Snake<\/em> is believed to have originated as a Delta blues in the 1920s, and be related to earlier songs, such as <em>Black Snake Blues<\/em> by Victoria Spivey (1926) and <em>Black Snake Moan<\/em> by Blind Lemon Jefferson (1926). As <em>Crawling King Snake<\/em>, it was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0VFKVnRsZwo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded by Big Joe Williams<\/a>\u260a in 1941. Shortly after, Delta bluesman Tony Hollins recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5IV6e8eg6qk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a markedly different version<\/a>\u260a, which served as the basis for many subsequent versions. John Lee Hooker began performing it live in the early 1940s.&#8221; (edited from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crawling_King_Snake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Aog-Hy5RFXs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crawling King Snake<\/a>\u260a was JLH&#8217;s third hit single and, like the previous <em>Boogie Chillen<\/em> and <em>Hobo Blues<\/em>, was released in 1948. He re-recorded it eleven years later, for what I consider to be one of his best albums, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/im-john-lee-hooker-mw0000242417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I&#8217;m John Lee Hooker<\/a>. The two versions are similar in form, but they sound very different. The earlier recording seems somewhat more timid, also because the voice is slightly far away, out of focus. The beat is slower, and a bit restrained. The 1959 version is faster, his foot on a board keeping the beat, and the guitar in the forefront. But it&#8217;s his voice, close miked and slightly reverbered, that makes the difference. It&#8217;s a haunting, threatening sound from the depths of hell. And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyricsmania.com\/crawlin_king_snake_lyrics_john_lee_hooker.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the lyrics<\/a>, macho and menacious, don&#8217;t help: he&#8217;s the King snake, he rules the place, and he loves it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>You know I&#8217;m a crawlin&#8217; king snake baby, and I rules my den<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I don&#8217;t want you hangin&#8217; around my mate, wanna use her for myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You know you caught me crawlin&#8217; baby when the, when the grass was very high<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I&#8217;m just gonna keep on crawlin&#8217; now baby until the day I die,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Because I&#8217;m a crawlin&#8217; king snake baby, and I rules my den<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Don&#8217;t you hangin&#8217; around my mate, wanna use her for myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You know I&#8217;m gon&#8217; crawl up to your window baby, wanna crawl up to your door,<br \/>\nYou got anything I want baby, wanna crawl up on your floor<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Because I&#8217;m a crawlin&#8217; king snake baby, and I rules my den.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are many covers of this tune. Hooker himself recorded it throughout his career, never managing to summon the same demons. There&#8217;s even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6IU26T4xf6I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1991 version with Keith Richard<\/a>\u260a (from JLH multiplatinum album <em>Mr Lucky<\/em>), sadly a bit flat and overproduced. Many other artists have covered <em>Crawling King Snake<\/em>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K5cwmZxW0Jc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Doors<\/a>\u260a and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wSeymGlkX0s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etta James<\/a>\u260a &#8211; who adds a layer of oddity, singing it in third person. They are a Techno band, but also manage to add different colors to their tunes. Also, they&#8217;re not afraid to venture into strange territory, sometime with amazing results. Two examples: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H5TVBIlyObw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banstyle\/Sappy&#8217;s Curry<\/a>\u260a has a fantastic symphonic structure, a perfect one note vocal line and a wagnerian finale. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zJExuGtRBok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skym<\/a>\u260a, on the other hand, is an emotional foray into digital sound poetry. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_of_Snake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Of Snake<\/a>, and its sampled guitar intro <em>Shudder<\/em>, were included in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beaucoup_Fish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beaucoup Fish<\/a>, an album with a difficult task: follow the immense success of the single <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Born_Slippy_.NUXX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Born Slippy<\/a>, used in the 1996 blockbuster film <em>Trainspotting<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Underworld&#8217;s lyric style is often pure stream of consciousness, and <em>King of Snake<\/em> is no exception. Set to the mandatory late-90s-Techno 140 bpm, this tune is really an evergreen &#8211; still danced to all over the world, in one of the many remixes (legal or otherwise) released throughout the years. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_of_Snake#Track_listings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The official list<\/a> is immense, and it&#8217;s a Who&#8217;s&#8217;who of the scene back then: Fatboy Slim, Ashley Beedle, Dave Clarke, Claudio Coccoluto and many others. The song&#8217;s bassline is lifted from Donna Summer&#8217;s Disco classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g0tenPCmHFk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I Feel Love<\/a>\u260a: that&#8217;s why the list of authors includes Giorgio Moroder and Summer. The original version has a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pi9buHnx9rU?t=8m45s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoken montage at the end<\/a>\u260a. Again: a little sound poetry (this time in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Engrish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engrish<\/a>), about snake fighting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Snake, snake, snake, snake fighting it&#8217;s very scary, fighting snake, really dangerous, so it&#8217;s really popular, at midnight everybody dancing on the street here, everyone with same identity, down their saki, saki&#8217;s really strong, like vodka, really dangerous so, everyone get a roll up of new newspaper, set it on fire, and put it in between, snake fighting life, strong food and strong drink at midnight.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Underworld included a live rendition of<em> King Of Snake<\/em> in their 2000 album <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Everything,_Everything\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everything, Everything<\/a>, that documents the &#8217;98\/&#8217;99 <em>Beaucoup Fish tour<\/em>. it&#8217;s a beautiful version, and also an occasion to see what a great Techno band at the top of their game could do to an audience*.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe style=\"border: 1px solid #3a3a3a;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/G_SBPZ_pdv4?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/B00LVI4QPU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy from amazon<\/a> \u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/album\/everything-everything-live\/id899506225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy from itunes<\/a> \u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/play.spotify.com\/album\/2Un5MRMFYfZF7UuDOfTaxi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">play on spotify<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n*One of the propelling ingredients of this tune is a House keyboard riff, very simple but murderously funky. In this version it comes in at 3:06, and the crowd goes wild.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"otw-sc-divider otw-text-left\" style=\"margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicki_Minaj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicki Minaj<\/a>: Anaconda<\/strong> (2014)<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sergiomessina.com\/moss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/nckmnj.jpg\" alt=\"nicki minaj\" width=\"180\" height=\"241\" \/>Warning: this song has nothing to do with snakes. The topic is perfectly explained on the cover: it&#8217;s the butt, but not just any butt. A BIG one, with prominent cheeks and the ability to behave as if it had a life of its own. The snake analogy is also very obvious (way more than in the elegant John Lee Hooker metaphor). The reptile in question belongs to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sir_Mix-a-Lot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sir Mix-a-Lot<\/a>, and it&#8217;s mentioned in his 1992 hit single <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baby_Got_Back\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baby Got Back<\/a>, a song that celebrates the African-american female behind. &#8220;At the time of its original release, the song caused controversy with its outspoken and blatantly sexual lyrics about women, as well as specific references to the female buttocks which some people found objectionable.&#8221; (from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baby_Got_Back\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>) At 3:03 into the song, Sir Mix-a-Lot declares: &#8220;My anaconda don&#8217;t want none unless you got buns hun!&#8221;<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>22 years later, this sample found its way to the Queen of Buttocks, Trinidadian-american rapper Nicki Minaj, who built <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anaconda_%28Nicki_Minaj_song%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anaconda<\/a> around this sampled verse, to celebrate her own sumptuous butt. The controversy started with the often censored cover picture (obscured even <a href=\"https:\/\/play.spotify.com\/track\/5a5so8nqDGq75MI5WMbBtT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Spotify<\/a>), and continued with the lavish video, an explicit ode to fat asses. It&#8217;s interesting to note that some avant-garde feminists approve of Minaj, who is certainly also putting center stage, and reclaiming, a part of the female black anatomy that hasn&#8217;t always been acceptable to the general white audiences (see the illuminating dialog in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_JphDdGV2TU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the intro of Sir Mix-a-Lot&#8217;s video<\/a>\u267e).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe style=\"border: 1px solid #3a3a3a;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/LDZX4ooRsWs?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/B00QRDCMJQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy from amazon<\/a> \u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/album\/the-pinkprint-deluxe-version\/id947648607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy from itunes<\/a> \u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/play.spotify.com\/track\/5a5so8nqDGq75MI5WMbBtT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">play on spotify<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<div class=\"otw-sc-divider otw-text-left\" style=\"margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">Runner ups<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnny Cash: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X1CNzOR80TA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(I&#8217;m getting swallowed by a) Boa Constrictor<\/a><\/strong>\u260a (1966) A children song, often performed on Tv.
